Thunderbird Conservation Park is a 1,185-acre park in the Hedgpeth Hills dedicated to preserving the desert environment. Located in the middle of town, Thunderbird has a little bit of everything and, most importantly, its trails are composed of sweet Sonoran singletrack. There are not a lot of long wide open "let it fly" type of sections, the trails at T-Bird are better known for being interval central. As a result, about 75% of the time you'll be either climbing or descending. There are also a lot of turns, switchbacks and rocks to hone your technical prowess.
Over the last couple of years the trail crews have made vast improvements to the quality of the trails for mountain bikers. They even built a bridge across the road to connect trails. What once was loose, steep and baby head rocky is now smoother and much more ridable. Some might complain about that, but it expanded the park for MTBs, made it feesable for singlespeed use and now you're able to cover much more ground with less effort. Truth be told; if you like powering through rock gardens, fast sketchy downhills, lung busting lactic acid inducing climbs and sweetly carved single track, by all means, come on down. This trail is unheralded, but it is very worthy.
There are always hikers along the way, but most of them are quite courteous, please return the favor to them. The ebb and flow of this trail system is condusive to hiker and mountain biker compatability.
